home to an art gallerist and her husband, is complemented by a bold modernist extension designed by Bindloss Dawes. The fusion of historic charm and sleek contemporary design creates a compelling dialogue between past and present, seamlessly connecting the home to its landscape. The Brief: The goal was to create beautiful views from the large windows of the new kitchen extension and make the courtyard feel like a holiday retreat, perfect for dining and hosting. The family wanted spaces for children to play and use their imagination, as well as an area to grow their own food, surrounded by nature. The Design:&nbsp; The courtyard merges indoors and outdoors. To honor the farmhouse's agricultural roots and complement the modern extension, we chose utilitarian poured concrete slabs softened by creeping Thyme and Soleirolia soleirolii. A dining area is defined by a change to red clay pavers in a basket weave pattern. Bespoke raised beds of traditional brickwork are filled with grasses and flowers, adding movement and beauty while supporting the foundationless building. A steel planter with an evergreen Eriobotrya japonica anchors the space. A deep, old well uncovered during site clearance was transformed into a feature: its stonework is now illuminated at night, offering a touch of history and intrigue. The boulder garden on the left of the garden is filled with woodland and large-leaved plants like Schefflera taiwaniana, Tetrapanax papyrifer ‘Rex’, Euphorbia ‘Minor’s Merlot’, and Rogersia aesculifolia. In the sweeping grass bed, we’ve planted pollinator-friendly species such as Verbena, Veronicastrum, Salvia, and Geums, along with grasses like Calamagrostis, Stipa, and Miscanthus, offering seasonal structure. A short, neat lawn separates the boulder garden from the grass bed, and further up, we sowed a wildflower lawn to benefit pollinators. In the paddock, a wildflower meadow, orchard trees, and raised beds for vegetables and berries will help create a self-sustaining family space. The driveway has been resurfaced in Somerset Buff Self Binding Gravel, ensuring a functional, aesthetically pleasing entry. Phase 2 will begin next year, focusing on a fairy walk, children’s garden, and fire pit area. Habitat Creation 0.3-acre Wildflower Meadow: A vibrant patchwork of native wildflowers to support pollinators. Species-Rich Lawn: A mix of clover, knapweed, buttercups, and birdsfoot trefoil, encouraging biodiversity. Mini Orchard: New orchard planting, offering fresh fruit and supporting the landscape’s ecology. Tree &amp; Hedge Maintenance: Care for the 4m high Fagus hedge and treatment for a diseased Aesculus hippocastanum. Lighting Design: Low-impact lighting that highlights key features without disturbing nocturnal wildlife. Additional Hedging: 100m of hedging planted to enhance shelter and privacy. Woodland Planting Bed: A large woodland planting bed creates habitat and depth in the garden. Ornamental Grass Bed: Filled with pollinator-friendly plants, offering food and shelter for insects and birds. of a Victorian property in Ladbrook Grove.&nbsp; The Brief: Create a laid back, contemporary, design that looks beautiful when viewed from inside. To be filled with plants that have gorgeous big leaves, lots of green and not too many flowers! The Design:&nbsp; We chose a soft creamy clay paver to line the terrace, the hard rectilinear lines of the beds are softened as Hakonechloa and Pittosporum spill over the edges blurring the boundaries between hard and soft. The dining area at the back is hidden from view surrounded by drought tolerant olives and salvia. Passion flower and scented Jasmin cover the walls and bamboo lines the back bed creating privacy and hiding the unsightly air source heat pump. It was a delight planting this project up, bees starting feasting on the new plants before they were even in the ground! A bespoke kitchen sits outside of the house, and Nkuku terracotta planters are filled with herbs, perfect for seasoning the food as it goes onto the BBQ. &nbsp; PROJECT Wallingford Avenue DURATION Viriditas were tasked to refresh this Clapton couple’s garden elevating some of the features they loved like the existing pond, editing the trees and shrubs which had outgrown the space and adding wildlife friendly planting that would not only please Clapton's local wildlife but also be beautiful when the couple look out of their windows onto the space. The Design:&nbsp; The couples pond has been expanded into a naturalistic pool for their coy carp to explore amoungst multi-level planting including water iris and lillys. Oversized boulders in warm sandstone now mark the existing level change nestling into the decking with rockery planting inhabiting the nooks and crannies between. Across the bridge lies the outdoor dining area placed to make the most of the gardens last light ensconced in planting beds to all sides. HABITAT CREATION: Wildlife pond with aquatic planting and pebbles to mimic a natural pond edge environment.Boulders for amphibians and small mammals to hide in.Pollinator mix of flowers including showcasing the very best in garden design, horticulture and innovation. In 2025 Viriditas Studio designed The ME+EM City Garden, a balcony garden created in partnership with British womenswear brand ME+EM. The Brief: The brief was to create a balcony garden that reflects ME+EM’s ethos of timeless, functional and beautiful design while offering a calming retreat for busy modern women living in the city. Inspired by the dynamic lives of the ME+EM customer — balancing work, family and personal life — the garden demonstrates how even the smallest outdoor space can provide a meaningful connection to nature. The design explores the belief that nature has the power to soothe and transform, creating a place where women can pause, recharge and escape from the pressures of daily life. The Design:&nbsp; The ME+EM City Garden imagines a tranquil balcony high above the city, where the last of the evening sun filters through climbing plants and textured materials. The 100 square foot garden features generous planters clad in moss green and soft pink bejmat tiles, overflowing with plants that thrive in late afternoon sunlight. Fragrant planting encourages interaction with nature and provides flowers that can be brought indoors, extending the experience of the garden into the home. Clay plaster walls provide a natural textured backdrop, contrasting with the gloss of the tiles and emphasising the interplay of light and material throughout the space. The garden demonstrates how thoughtful, sustainable design can transform even the smallest urban space into a restorative retreat that nurtures both people and the environment. landscape, we are fortunate to be custodians of a truly remarkable plot of land. The River Alham weaves its way through the property, offering a home to an extraordinary tapestry of wildlife. From the darting flash of kingfishers and herons skimming the water’s surface to the occasional sighting of otters, we are constantly reminded of the vitality of this place. As dusk falls, a barn owl sweeps over the fields, while the steady rhythm of woodpeckers, deer, badgers, buzzards, and slow worms punctuates the landscape. This land, rich in history and wildlife, is a haven for so many creatures—and we are privileged to care for it. Every step of the way, our design and stewardship has been guided by a deep respect for the natural world. The DESIGN: The majority of our eight acres remain wild, with the larger four-acre paddock—which was once overgrazed and depleted—undergoing a transformation into a more biodiverse space. This process is far from finished, but the foundations have been laid. To date, we have dug a 0.3-acre wildlife pond, planted 400 native woodland trees, and established a one-acre food forest. We’ve left the thistles to grow and watched, as the land has come alive with clouds of butterflies and dragonflies. Looking ahead, we are committed to increasing this diversity, with plans to sow yellow rattle and enhance the native wildflower population. With the restoration of the Mill House now complete, we turn our attention to the external spaces, where we continue to use local materials in a way that’s both thoughtful and sensitive to the landscape. The drive has been resurfaced with Somerset Buff Self Binding Gravel, and new planting beds, crafted from local stone, are filled with a mix of flowers and evergreens. In the coming months, we will dredge the old mill pond and stream, giving them a new lease of life, and will plant thousands of Fritillaria meleagris, a flower well-suited to the damp conditions here. Looking ahead to next year, we plan to transform the courtyard into a space that invites both relaxation and entertainment. Giant slabs of local stone will form the foundation of a gravel garden, providing a sense of structure, while creating a space to dine and entertain. By the mill pond, we will build a stone dipping pool—an oasis where we can unwind at the end of the day. HABITAT CREATION Wildlife Pond (0.3 acres): Completed in 2023, this pond was funded in part by a grant from the Somerset Rivers Authority. It now serves as a thriving habitat for aquatic life. Food Forest (1 acre): Planted in 2022, this food forest is already maturing well, with a mix of 82 edible and nitrogen-fixing trees, providing a varied and sustainable source of produce. Native Woodland Whips (400 trees): Planted in 2023, this woodland garden is part of an ongoing effort to increase biodiversity and provide a richer, more diverse ecosystem. Polytunnel: Built in 2023, the polytunnel has proved to be a valuable asset, supplying 50% of our fruit and vegetables for 2024. Orchard: The existing orchard has been revitalised, with new plantings of cherries and apricots added to complement the mature trees. Woodland Garden &amp; Tree Swing: A new woodland garden has been planted, with a tree swing to invite moments of joy and connection to the land. Meadow Management: A program of meadow management is underway. This winter, we will sow yellow rattle after the pigs have grazed and disturbed the ground, an important first step in rejuvenating this area. Tennis Court Gardens: Hundreds of ornamental grasses and verbena have been planted around the tennis court, softening the space and bringing a sense of harmony to the surroundings. Every corner of this place is evolving, but always with an eye on the natural rhythms and balance of the land. It is a slow process, but one that brings deep satisfaction and joy as we watch nature return to reclaim its place. The Brief: Situated on the corner of a residential street, the property — a maisonette — initially had only a driveway and a small, neglected patch of lawn, making it feel quite exposed. Our clients, both NHS doctors, envisioned a sunken garden as their personal sanctuary — a tranquil retreat from the hustle and bustle of daily life where they could unwind after long, busy days. The wife, whose mother is originally from the Seychelles, has a deep love for the island’s lush, tropical feel, and so they asked if we could bring a touch of the Seychelles to Southwest London! The Design:&nbsp; We excavated the lawn to create a tranquil sunken garden, designed to naturally buffer street noise. A sleek, powder-coated steel water feature cascades gently to a lower level, further masking the sounds of passing cars. An extra long bespoke bench was designed so that they can host friends into the evening and on the other side we created a built in sun lounger to lie back, relax and listen to the slow trickle of the water. For the raised planters and garden walls, we chose a bold, vibrant red, which strikingly contrasts with the lush greenery. The planting features warm oranges and splashes of purple blooms, set against a backdrop of abundant foliage. Encircling the sunken garden is a species-rich meadow lawn, teeming with colourful flowers and alive with pollinators, bringing the space to life. HABITAT CREATIONThe monoculture lawn has been swapped for species rich wildflower mix. &nbsp;A pond with planting for amphibians and pollinators has been created.Pollinator mix of flowers including Echinacea, Achillea, Salvia and Heleniums has been planted. orchard. The Brief: Keep nature front and centre, keep it natural, light touch intervention. We are starting with the areas furthest from the house whilst the new kitchen extension is built and will work our way back, finally building the courtyard area. Areas for the family to entertain friends at night and relax surrounded by nature as well as restoration of the orchard were our starting points. THE DESIGN, PHASE 1: Woodland Dining Terrace and Firepit. Large sliced boulders make up a the floor of the dining terrace, over time as vegetation creeps in around them they will feel as if they have been there forever. A table made from enormous slices of Sequoia gigantum that fell in a storm have been cut and dried to make a bespoke one of a kind table with Hay Palissade dining chairs. A work surface and log store have been built out of local stone. Stepping stones lead to the firepit area with a stone firepit created by master stone mason Tom Troughton. Six Hay Palissade arm chairs have been placed for relaxation, naturalistic boulders are lit up at night and moonlighters that mimic the light of the moon have been placed in the branches of the Betula, creating dappled light through its branches. Front Drive. Planning has been approved to move the drive to the back of the house removing car parking from the area that will become the courtyard. HABITAT CREATION: 0.5 Acre Woodland: Arboriculturalist report was undertaken and dead and diseased trees were removed. Removal of brambles and planting of native whips. Planting of hundreds of spring flowering bulbs. Bark mulch is added to improve soil structure.&nbsp; Orchard: Removal of dead fruit tree, with trunks left on the land as wildlife and fungi habitat. Sensitive pruning of old productive trees.&nbsp;Addition of new trees. Planting of Oxeye daisies in the long grass to increase diversity. fabulous floral displays and in 2023 Viriditas Studio created an award-winning show garden at the festival. The Brief: The brief is to inspire a love of nature in the students. Many inner city students do not have their own gardens and multiple studies show that young people are more disconnected from nature than ever. We used affordable, and where possible, reclaimed materials to create a space that is appealing to wildlife and also a haven for the students. The pollinator-friendly planting palette is easy to maintain so that the children can manage it themselves, igniting their passion for gardening! The Design:&nbsp; Nurturing Nature in the City is a haven for wildlife at its final destination, Acland Burghley school in Camden. Taking inspiration from inner city green developments along disused urban railways such as the High Line in NYC and Parkland Walk in Highgate the garden distils the ideas from these enormous projects into a space where schools or even home gardeners could replicate something similar using waste and reclaimed materials on a budget. The feeling of being in a wild space is evoked using stone, water and earth within an urban inner-city environment. The 25 Square meters of garden is brimming with opportunities for wildlife including multiple habitats: gabion walls, mini wildflower strips, pollinator planting, ponds and nest pockets wrapped around a central seating area for people to enjoy the diversity of life that can thrive in a small space. Reclaimed and waste materials reign supreme: reclaimed sleepers and scaff boards, crushed stone is used for the seating areas, waste stone off cuts from our local quarry are used for the facing stones in the gabion walls and waste materials are used to fill the centre of the gabions.
