Thornton Avenue

The Place:
A back to bricks renovation of a family home is Chiswick.

The Brief:
To create a wildlife friendly garden with lots of space for their three young children to learn and play in, plus dog friendly planting for their energetic boxer dog.

The Design:
The entire back portion of the garden was made into a children’s discovery area, complete with mud kitchen, wendy house and bee hotel. We removed a dated palm tree adding in a wildlife friendly birch instead. Woodland planting of ferns, hellebores and hydrangeas compliment a bevy of spring flowering bulbs for early rising pollinators.

A secret stepping stone pathway guides the children through the planting bed on the shady right handside of the garden where hazel and crab apple trees were planted with more woodland planting for the children to navigate to make it to their play area!

We commissioned Julia Clarke to create a sculptural willow screen to hide the unsightly air source heat pump under the sycamore tree. On the tumbled limestone terrace we designed a bespoke L shaped seating system with built-in planters filled with sun loving prairie style planting. A feast for pollinators and beautiful for the humans who occupy the garden too.
